Carolina and Virginia settlers made their new home along the forks of the upper Ogeechee River in 1773. Named Bethany, it was the earliest known white settlement in an area previously serving as a prime hunting and fishing site for the Creek and
Cherokee Nations.
In February of 1786, Greene County was officially organized and named in honor of noted Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene.
