Welcome to the Best of Both Worlds!

Green County is a virtual kaleidoscope of colorful images, large and small. More than 15,000 gracious citizens celebrate the good life with considerable zest and zeal.

Central to the Southeast with easy access via Interstate 20, Greene County is a Georgia Certified Work Ready Community with a pro-business atmosphere. Picturesque Lake Oconee, superb golf, and stellar attractions such as Reynolds Plantation, combine to make Greene County an inviting place to both visit or call home. The University of Georgia is only a short drive away in nearby Athens.

Greene County offers a vibrant, quality lifestyle amidst a rich history highlighted by three centuries of hardy settlers and Victorian heritage. Scotch-Irish Presbyterians from North Carolina and Virginia settlers made their new home along the forks of the upper Ogeechee River in 1773. Named Bethany, it was the earliest known white settlement in an area previously serving as a prime hunting and fishing site for the Creek and Cherokee Nations.

In February of 1786, Greene County was officially organized and named in honor of noted Revolutionary War General, Nathanael Greene.
